Frequently asked questions about in-home piano lessons

What are the benefits of music lessons at home?

Music lessons in your own home can save a great deal of time. You have the comfort of being in your own home, playing on your own piano, in an environment you are familiar with.

Who is right for in-home lessons?

Anyone with a busy lifestyle and a piano at home. This includes students of all skill levels. Kids these days frequently participate in many activities, and parents especially appreciate not having to drive them to yet another.

What equipment do I need at home?

You need:

  • A piano, either a grand, an upright, or an 88-key digital with weighted keys.
  • A quiet room.
  • At least one chair for me to sit in.

Are in-home music teachers of the same quality as those who teach out of a studio?

Many traveling piano teachers do so because they are just starting out, or because they don’t have a place to teach, or because they want to offer an extra service in order to be competitive.

Both high and low-quality music instructors are found everywhere. Furthermore, a teacher that is perfect for one student may be awful for you. As always, I highly recommend you evaluate a teacher based on what your goals are, and whether or not you believe the teacher can help you reach those goals. At the end of the day, you want a fantastic teacher who can provide you with exactly what you need.

What should I expect from in-home music lessons?

In general, you should expect that lessons will be taught in a professional manner, just as if you went to a studio or school of music.

In my experience traveling to students’ homes, I have learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t. Scheduling can be difficult. I try to be as flexible as I can, but the fact that I have to drive means that we need to work together to find a schedule that serves us both.

Teaching in someone else’s home makes it difficult for me to control the environment to the degree I would like to. So, I ask that you make sure the lesson area is free from distractions. Please refrain from watching television, playing video games, or having conversations nearby.

Please understand that driving and traffic can be an issue. Be ready to start on time, as I may need to leave as soon as the hour is up. However, I may be late at times, in which case I will try to stay longer to make up the time.
