  • Karmic trash collector needed

    I’m a karmic trash collector.

It’s one of my official job titles here at Michael Korman, Inc.

Perhaps you’d like to apply for this position. We have an opening.

(No, I can’t pay you anything. I can’t even give you a desk or a business card. All you’ll get is the satisfaction of knowing you’re doing your part to clean up the world of psychic garbage.)

Let me give you a quick job description:

Your duties will be to pick up stray pieces of toxic positivity and replace them with pieces of reality.

For example, if you’re angry about something, it will be your duty to allow that anger to express itself. That doesn’t mean you attack the other person (necessarily), but it means you recognize that there are three people in the room: you, the person you’re angry at, and the version of you that’s angry. Given that the version of you that’s angry is normally the one silenced by societal expectations, you’ll fight against this and allow that person to speak. This will benefit all three of you, since it will be a learning experience for everyone.

Basically, you look at situations from the perspective of the broader system, rather than only from your individual point-of-view.

(it’s mostly a lot of entry-level “allowing problems to resolve themselves rather than rushing to solve them yourself”…)

Minimum qualifications include: a willingness to be seen as irrational, angry, and not mindful.

Sign up now for this great opportunity to practice the skills you’ve learned in meditation in a real-world environment.

The planet will thank you (after you’re dead, probably).

  • I guess it was too much for them

I also used to get upset when I saw charlatans spouting misinformation online.

“I have to put a stop to you! You’re hurting innocent students.”

At some point, this turned into a realization that I was frustrated with my own abilities,

which turned into a realization that the way I had been taught was the cause of my deficiencies,

which turned into excitement about how to do it better,

which elicited attacks from those who are attached to the status quo,

which turned into anger toward my teachers,

    which turned into

    You know what? Screw this.

  • musicians are some of the most awful people i know

I offered a helpful piano tip yesterday, and now I’m enmeshed in a huge war trying to fight off cyberbullies.

This is exactly why I haven’t been helpful my whole life.

    It’s not worth it.

Do yourself a favor: keep your nose down and don’t try to contribute to society. You’ll live longer.

  • meditation is for losers

You should meditate if you are curious about meditation and you want to see what all the fuss is about. Otherwise, you shouldn't.

You'll just confuse yourself, and everyone around you.

When you meditate, your goal should be enlightenment. Nothing else. Any other goal, and you'll be striving too hard.

Go ahead, challenge me. I have space for it right now.

In fact, I just wrote a post in a piano group that's getting tons of hate right now:

P.S. Buy my stuff. No, don't buy it.
  • I can’t believe I have to spell it out like this

Hey, just a quick reminder: this cult is for people who want to learn the kind of stuff I want to teach.

If you’re more interested in using me as a foil to prove how right you are, get lost.

If you’re more interested in changing my behavior to prove how good of a teacher you are, get lost.

If you’re feeling resentful that I’m “forcing” you to stay in this cult because we’re friends and you don’t want to disappoint me, get lost.

If you’re here just because you want to support me but you’re not interested in anything I have to say, get lost (and please replace yourself with someone you think will benefit from what I have to say).

    Are we clear?

  • If you think there’s no wrong way to meditate, you’re doing it wrong.

Of course there’s a right way.

Why would you bother meditating if there weren’t a right way? Why would you need to practice? Why would anyone teach meditation?

If there were no wrong way, you could pick absolutely any activity you want and call it “meditation”, and you’d be meditating correctly.

Do that if you want, but you’ve made the word “meditation” useless.

(Oh, by the way, maybe you’d find it easier to meditate everyday if you knew when you were doing it right or wrong…)
